Batam city is strategically located in The Malaka Strait, one of the busiest shipping route in the world. It is only 12.5 sea miles to the south of Singapore. By ferry ride, it takes about 45 minutes up to 1.2 hours to Singapore and vice versa.

Batam borders on Singapore toward the north. District of Senayang, Bintan Regency toward the south. Karimun Regency toward the west. District of North and South Bintan, Bintan Regency toward the east. As an archipelagic city, Batam consist of 329 islands covering 1,570 sq-km area. There are five big islands, those are Batam Island (415 sq-km), Rempang Island (165.85 sq-km), Galang Island (80 sq-km), Galang Baru Island (32 sq-km) and Bulan Island (100 sq-km).

Batam has a tropical climate. The average temperature was ranging from 26^oC – 28^o C where the maximum temperature was 30^oC -34^oC. The maximum and minimum atmospheric pressures were respectively 1,004.5 MBS and 1,018.2 MBS. The average humidity of atmosphere was 77 – 86% with the maximum speed of wind 18 – 26 knot or 9 knot on average.

Tourism is one of strategic sectors in the economy of Batam. It is developed through exploring its beautiful scenery such as beach, coral reef, hilly forest, and etc. In the frame of diversification its tourism, nowadays Batam is also developed as MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Conference, Exhibition) city.

Batam has a lot of modern tourism facilities to sustain its development for the next future. Those facilities like hotel, resort and golf course, traditional village, historical heritages, shopping centres, large stadium, are easier to be found in Batam. The tourism sector has given positive contribution to the economy of Batam. It directly enhances government revenues through tax and people income. The City Government of Batam together with other institutions take many efforts to increase tourists visit and their length of stay in Batam.
